September ushers in all the feels of fall–the sights, the scents, the cooler weather–not to mention all of the fun annual family activities like hayrides, pumpkin picking, and corn mazes. A family favorite of ours is apple picking, which Rhode Island has some of the best farms for.   

Please use and enjoy this guide to apple picking in Rhode Island. It lists orchards offering pick-your-own apples throughout the state and a few over the border in Massachusetts.

In Providence County

Barden Family Orchard

Apple picking is available seven days a week during picking season at Barden Family Orchard. Their farm stand offers additional goodies produced on the farm like their sweet apple cider and peach and berry jams!

Jaswell’s is a fifth-generation, family-owned farm that grows 14 varieties of apples. Call ahead for picking hours or visit their website for more up-to-date information or to make a picking reservation. Make sure you don’t leave Jaswell’s without sampling their delicious apple cider donuts.

Open daily for apple picking during picking season, Pippin Orchard also has fresh cider donuts, candy apples, pies, and other goodies available. While you’re there, be sure to say hello to some pretty cute goats who enjoy greeting visitors!

One of Rhode Island’s oldest orchards, Sunset Orchard grows 25 different varieties of apples. Over the Border in Massachusetts

The Big Apple

Plan to spend quite a bit of time at The Big Apple with all that it has to keep families entertained. Children can watch the apple grader sort the apples from a viewing platform or take a peek at the bakery making fresh cider donuts. Hop on the wagon to take a scenic ride to the picking site, enjoying a tour of the orchard along the way. Follow them on Facebook for specific picking dates. Note: The Big Apple does not accept credit cards, so be sure to have plenty of cash on hand!
