We’ve just enjoyed some of the best seasons for getting outdoors and exploring the many local parks and playgrounds that Rhode Island has to offer. But are you and the kids feeling a bit of fall playground burnout by this point? You may have also exhausted the bucket list (and budget) for all the fall activities, so now what? How do you extend the fun beyond your favorite parks and playgrounds for some free outdoor fall fun?
You save and use our top four budget-friendly activities to shake things up outdoors and beat fall playground burnout!
1. BOOKS x OUTDOORS
It’s no secret that I love a library visit, and the change in seasons won’t change that. Library events are a great opportunity to get out of the house for FREE fun! We’re fortunate to have such active children’s libraries here in Rhode Island offering a variety of activities for all ages. Whether you visit for an outdoor storytime, check out some of the best fall titles from our Fall Picture Book List to enjoy under the changing foliage, visit a StoryWalk along a local trail, or sign up for another awesome event like this library-led StoryWalk, you’re bound to have a great time!
2. HIT THE TRAILS
A great way to get those legs prepared for trailing their pails on Halloween night is by hitting some of your local trails. Rhode Island may be small, but we have a mighty big list of trails that are perfect for families to tackle together. With cooler temperatures come fewer bugs and less sweat, plus the chance to enjoy the impressive fall foliage.
We love revisiting our favorite hiking spots, such as Frenchtown Park Trail in East Greenwich, to observe the seasonal transformations. If you’re looking for a simpler route, explore one of these family-friendly walks throughout the state.
3. ART IN NATURE
A-R-T is not only in the word nature, but also can be found in nature itself. There are countless ways to highlight the beauty of nature to our little ones, and art is an excellent medium for doing just that.
- Gather old paper towel rolls and tape to create your own Nature Bracelets or Nature Crowns.
- Collect leaves and create a leaf-rubbing masterpiece.
- Create a nature-inspired art exhibit at your local park for other visitors to enjoy.
4. SCAVENGER HUNT
Whether you’re looking to head to your local park or stay right in your backyard while a younger sibling naps, scavenger hunts are where it’s at. If you’re venturing to a local park, there are many nature-inspired scavenger hunt lists that are readily available on Pinterest that you can use as a guide.
If you’re staying home, simply grab a few objects that are different sizes, colors, and textures. Stuffed animals, action figures, or colored blocks work well. Your scavenger hunt lists can be themed or random items that you choose. Make a quick checklist for your kiddo to track what has been found, hide the objects, and hunt away! If your children are older you can also list strategic clues that will help them find certain items. A fun twist on this activity could be allowing your child to hide the items in your backyard and then you find them.
We’d love to hear some of your favorite ideas for free outdoor fun that will help alleviate any fall playground burnout that you might be experiencing!
