Annual Providence Tree Lighting Ceremony- Livestream
December 5th
As part of the start of the holiday season, Mayor Elorza and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism are thrilled to announce the City’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be reimagined into a virtual experience. Attendees are invited to participate in the live-streamed event on Saturday, December 5 at 5:00 PM on Mayor Jorge Elorza’s Facebook page. The digital ceremony, produced in partnership with Steer Media, will feature performances by Festival Ballet Providence’s Nutcracker and Trinity Rep’s Joe Wilson, Jr. reprising the roll of Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. At approximately 5:10 PM, Mayor Elorza and The Rhode Show’s Brendan Kirby will illuminate the tree, generously donated by Joseph and Donna Blanchette of North Scituate. During the event, the tree at the Providence Rink at the BankNewport City Center will also be lit.
The Nutcracker Live (Stream)
December 5th and 6th
The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816 and revised by Alexandre Dumas in 1844. It is set to the music of composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. The Nutcracker premiered in Saint Petersburg at the Marinsky Theater in December 1892. Its first United States performance was in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet. The ballet did not achieve popularity in the United States until The New York City Ballet first performed George Balanchine’s version of The Nutcracker in 1954. The now-beloved ballet has become a holiday tradition for many families across the country for more than 60 years.
Pennsylvania Ballet Conservatory is a classical ballet school located in Peters Township. It was founded in August 2018. Its mission is to develop and inspire healthy dancers in a positive environment while providing them with professional-quality ballet instruction and instilling an appreciation and lifelong love of dance.
